Anyone using this combination, and if so, do you have any tips to help with the learning curve? I'm about to buy some A3 sheets of Canson Canvas, and would like to minimize printing duds, so if there is anything I should watch out for, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

OMG !!! I am never printing on anything else again! shocked; I had stuff done on canvas before, but never did it myself - this is light-years better than the stuff I had done in the past! Wow! I'm excited... :D

So, I take it your printing went well? :brows:

Kevin, if you saw these canvases, your printer decision would be made right there on the spot - seriously! I'm absolutely gobsmacked at how beautiful they look...

Rudi,

I'm interested in your comments because I'm about to take delivery of an Epson 3800 Pro, and...I've never done any of my own printing from digital, but have dark room experience. Can you offer any tips to a total noob? My monitor is calibrated but I presume I need profiles and...:confused_1:
I'm excited for this will open up a whole new area of photography that I've missed since the days working with an enlarger and all those carcinogens. I'll be working from tifs and I'm hoping the processing I've completed for several shots will prove to be suitable when I see a hard printed version.

Robert,

As far as the Epson Pro 3800 goes, it is the best printer that I ever owned. This is in part because of the printer hardware itself, and in a large part because Epson supplied some VERY accurate bottled profiles with it! I'd advise you start printing on Epson media, or ask for ICC profiles when you buy third party media, and as long as the profiles supplied are of good quality, the 3800 will pleasantly surprise you. There are no nasty surprises with this one...

To be fair, my last two Epsons also had good profiles, but the 3800's profiles are more accurate (as is to be expected from a printer that Epson market as part of their "professional" line). I am getting prints that match my monitor output, without any additional profiling. You can, of course, profile your printer to each individual batch of paper as well, if you have the hardware, but I have found this unnecessary. Maybe there is another giant leap to be made, but I am happy with the prints that I get out of the 3800 with the supplied profiles, and so are my clients. And as long as they're happy, I'm not going to change a thing! :D

Rudi,

That's great to know! I have been concerned that a heavy learning curves lies ahead with printing. I've enough trouble keeping up with all the rest of it.
This will open up a very exciting addition to my love of photography, and I hope to start generating some interest at several venues where I'll be able to hang some framed prints.

Thanks mate!!

Rudi,
Canson Canvas?????

I'm looking of rCanvas to print on my Epson 4800. I take it you would recommend!
Where did you purchase it from?
Regards

I purchased some A3 sheets from a local shop (Madsens in Wollongong), but that was just because I needed some samples before Sunday (I purchased on Saturday). I have since purchased a 17" wide roll from Kayell in Artarmon, Sydney, but there should be a brach in Queensland (closer to you?). Kayell have been my preferred supplier for a while mainly because of the after-sales service - you will get a profile with each paper that you purchase from them (well, at least I do). Service second to none! :)

How are you liking your Epson 3800? I really like the 3800 but how do you print a 16 x 24 print on it? Most of the papers are only 17 x 22. You would have to cut it from roll stock and then feed it manually is what I'm thinking.
How do you print Panos with the 3800?

These are the questions that have stopped me from ordering one. I did see a Canon IPF6100 in action at a semiar the other day and it was impressive. I'm sure the new 5100 has many of the same features as the 6100.

The current pricing on the 3800 is really tempting. There are some rebates available
which makes me wonder if an updated version will be introduced after the first of the year?

Hi Morrie,

I usually print on A2 sheets, but if I need a longer print, such as a 34" pano that I printed the other day, I just cut the required length off a 17" roll and feed it into the printer - no problem! In fact, I will be purchasing all my stock on 17" rolls in the future, since that works out a lot cheaper.

Rudi, Have just received the profile for my printer for the paper. Can you advise how to load the profile?

Rob,

I'm not sure where you load the drivers in Windows (I'm on a Mac :)), hopefully someone will pipe up in here. If not, I will see what I can find out tomorrow and let you know.

Assuming Windows is on the C:\ drive, the profiles are usually stored in:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color

I hope that helps.
