I was on Dpreview yesterday just to have a look. They were all on about the latest firmware update for the 40D 1.05 and how you should do that.
Any way with the link provided I had a look and printed the the instructions. I down loaded the file to my program files. Unzipped it per instructions. Put a formatted card in to my card reader. And dropped the file on to the card, I could see she was reading as the light was going.
I checked the card per computer, to see the content. It showed the correct size of 8,187,036. I put a fully charged battery in to the camera. Put the card in, went to the menu were firm ware is. This is what the camera said:
CF card containing firmware
is required to update
cannot update
OK
So this has me totally stumped, what does this mean. Other than that it looks like I will not do any firmware updates.
Have any of you 40D owners done this update and how did you do it.

I haven't updated the Firmware on the 40D yet but I have done it on several other Canon bodies with no problems. Where did you format the card, in the camera or on your computer? You should do it in the camera and if you did use the computer it needs to be FAT 32 rather than NTFS.

Hi Ellen, I updated from 1.03 to 1.05 a couple days ago.
Downloaded and unzipped file to desktop (XP) put 2 gig card into 40D and formatted. I believe 2 gig is the largest you can use for this function. Opened EOS Utility and transferred to Camera. Was asked if continue with update(LCD on camera) and selected continue, hit set, and it was done. Took a couple minutes at most.
So, if you used a 1-2 gig card maybe try to format from the EOS Utility program or in the 40D and do update through that program with your 40D directly USB cabled to computer. This should eliminate any card reader errors. (My last card reader crashed after 6 days so I'm a little cautious about updating through one.

Thank you Ron and David. I did format the card in the camera. It is a 1gig Ultra 2 card. I will see what I can do later.

Just like you to know , A kind gentleman on Dpreview did a full visual for me to follow. It seems I made a couple mistakes before. But with the instructions, that I could understand I have done the update successfully.
