a while back I purchased a printer profile from Cathys profiles ( which I would highly recommend!) Can get expensive if you use different papers but I found I was able to print pretty accurate as to what I was seeing on my monitor. I have since purchased a new computer, different video card, Im thinking that old profile is no good anymore??? thoughts............ my prints are not what they use to be, guess redundant question, but anyone here that profiles or does allot of printing will know :)

Keith,
I am no expert but I would think that the value of a profile is in that it mimick your specific computers rendering of an image. Since you have changed I would highly reccomend you recalibrate the monitor and send in and get another profile.
OTOH, I do not use custom profiles as the paper I am using is coming out spot on with the epson profile provided with the driver on my printer YMMV.

Hi Keith
If you are using the same printer then you should not need a new printer profile for the same paper. However, you will have to calibrate your monitor to reflect your old one. If it was not properly calibrated then I am afraid you are out of luck.

hmmmm, I profile my monitor every 60 days or so, I know I had more of an adjustment in monitor settings so that maybe the difference. Although I dialed it up in settings, but my pics printed look more unsaturated
worst part is I dont think I want to get it profiled yet as I might be moving to LCD in the next little while so it would change again. I should check the canon paper profile and try one of the custom profile and see the difference?
thanks Rory, very frustrating!

Keith, to me it would depend on how you had the printer profile built. Usually, printer profiles are part of total color workflow -- from a calibrated monitor all the way through to a printed output. In other words, the color that I see on my monitor are the colors that I see that are printed out of my printer. This means -- at least to me -- that what I see on my monitor are impacted/adjusted through my monitor profile to the system and then to the printer profile to drive my printer to produce the colors that I am seeing on my monitor to end up making my printer give me the same results. I guess what I am trying to say is that there is a "conversion routine" of sorts at the monitor end and one at the printer end -- and as long as both of these are going to the SAME base then you should be OK.
I bring this up as some printer profiles are built by you sending in a color bar print that you create and send in to create a printer profile -- if this is what you did, then I would offer up that you may have a problem -- as this was built specifically for your monitor / system. I use ImagePrint which provides more of a "generic" profile for each paper and not for my specific system but to a specific color point.
I understand your frustration, having the color workflow out of synch is a bummer.:(

improvements with the new computer, night and day with the dual processors and min 2gb of ram........as far as video card, cant say I notice a big difference. Im not convinced video cards have a big to do for viewing pictures and photography purposes, but video streaming and gaming I think it means everything..........if that makes sense!

Keith,
I have to agree with Dave on this one, but if you are going to be moving over to LCD I would definately hold off a little longer, or maybe someone from the profile company would send you something momentarily before you buy another one again. And also.. what printer are you using?? I have the Canon i9900 and I found that the Canon papers usually don't print well from it (sounds dumb huh? LOL) but the Ilford Pearl is GORGEOUS if you use the profiles from their site, but I have to say one thing.. the only printer I never had any problems with is the giant Fujinons at Costco.. they are great!! (especially for the price)

Oopss missed this, sorry..........
I use a Canon i960, and I had it profiled using the Canon paper and in my old machine, it was PERFECT. My prints matched my monitor. Since I bought my new dual processor, yada yada, my prints are down right disgusting.........Im wondering if it is double profiling?
I think Im starting from scratch here again now or use my other machine.........very disappointing to go through all this again.....such as life!
Monitor hasnt changed, I always profile my monitor every 30 days.......I know with this computer my profile was considerable different, so the video has to play a role Im thinking??
what do people use for monitor profiling 1.8 or 2.2 ?

Matrox video cards are the way to go for Photoshop work on a PC - they are amazing! But... these days the gap is narrowing. (It's a good thing I don't have to worry about these things now that I have moved over to Mac :)).
As for printer profiling, this is one of the reasons I only have an A4 printer these days. While the profiles supplied by Epson are great, and I have no real problems, I find that printing larger, I prefer to take it in to my local pro shop and they print it there, and
1. it works out cheaper;
2. the lovely lady that does my printing will colour-correct them if I made a boo-boo (I find this is really important with wedding photos - brides are really sensitive about the colour of their wedding dress - go figure! :D).

Dont know what I did but I had success cool; cool; I removed all my software, printing software, Monitor software and re-installed all my software, re-calibrated my monitor, and lastly re-loaded my printer profile I had done up for my my specific printer and paper and now works like a thing of beauty!!!!
OMG, little things in life that make me happy and this is one of them :D :D
Today is a good day :)
