Hi everyone.

Is someone able to advise some simple steps to loading & using printer profiles. I purchased some Canson Canvas paper & was emailed the profile which I have loaded but still cannot locate it when I go to print. Also, when I print, should I be usuing the same method as normal or should I be printing lloking for the paper in the profile box & not the paper (where I can't find it)

Any help appreciated

Rob,

are you printing through Photoshop, or another application?

Good question Rudi, depends on what application. I use Qimage for all my printing and I just set it in preferences in the software. Paper profiles are ok, but I purchased Cathys profiles about a year ago after calibrating my monitor and just night and day. I actually print what I see on my monitor. As well the profiles will change depending on what paper you use.

Hi Rudi, Printing through Photoshop. Never done it any other way

Keith, might have a look at this. Regards

Rob, you may have figured this out by now ..... but basically it is
in the CS print window for color management .... Color Handling is "photoshop manages color"... Printer Profile is "the profile that you downloaded for the paper" [you should have put this in the profiles folder for your system, on the mac that is in the main library -->color synch -->profiles ... don't know where it if for windows, so the system should be able to find it] .... Rendering Intent is "Perceptual" or "Relative" - pretty much your choice and then press Print to go to your printer driver .... make sure the right media type is selected in your media type [canvas in this case and you won't find this brand but maybe the Epson Canvas will work OK so that is what you are going to have to try -- I am assuming that you are using an Epson printer here] and finally make sure that you have color management in the printer driver turned OFF (No Color Adjustment). Press OK and you should get a print......

Hope this helps......

Thanks Mike! Yes, am using Epson Pro4800. I am beginning to wonder if the profile is loaded in the right spot. Will have a look as per what you have advised when I get home from work tonight. Much appreciated

Rob, if you're using a PC, this is where the color profiles are stored.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color

In PS, after you finished processing your image, you go to convert and select the printer profile you need. It's probably best to do this on a duplicate file, not your final image.

Once you've applied the profile in PS, you want to make sure you don't double profile. Turn color management off for the printer in the print dialogue software.

Every paper has a different profile. You need to apply what ever one you need for the paper you are going to print on.

While color management may sound simple, it's definitely not.
Even with good profiles it's not easy to get colors right.

Thanks Virginia. As Jerry says "It will all become clear soon"

I think you have answered my question re conversion & color management. Much appreciated

Wish I could help, Rob, but I haven't played inside Windows for over four years, and I can't say that I miss it! :D I'm sure someone here will point you in the right direction...

Hey everyone. A big thanks to all who helped me on this thread. Printed my first A3 print on Canvas tonight. Extremely happy. Will be presenting it to my client tomorrow so will see their reaction. Love the print.

Virginia,
In you post above you mentioned that I need to convert & select the printer profile. When you say convert, what do you mean? Still trying to get my head around this & want to have a go after re-building my computer

Rob,

I don't know if you have the answer to your last question yet, but I'll try to answer it.

As you are probably aware, using a printer profile doesn't affect the way a photo looks in Photoshop, however, it changes the file so that, when sent to the specified printer, it will print out what you see on the monitor, (or as close as it can get).

To do this, go to your edit pulldown at the top of the screen, then to "convert to profile". Change your destination space to the printer profile and select okay. If you are not doing this, this step should give you an improvement in color accuracy when you print.
