I sold my 30D, got the Mark II, primarily since I'm interested in sports.
Just fooling around at my house, backyard and such, I tried a few brief tests.

Using a 135 f/2L, on the Mark II...nice..very nice! Ditto for 5D, though focus is noticably faster on Mark II. Particulary in a dimly lit room inside my house. (no windows in upstairs office)
So I shot such riveting subjects as speaker grills, air vents ...in dim light, at 1600 ISO.
A couple of things I noticed, even with both cameras set to multi-AF point, the AF on the 1D was noticably faster, and locked quickly. Now the 5D is fast..and accurate, but not -as-fast.
So far so good...then I looked at the pics on my calibrated Apple monitor.
What jumped out me was the noise in the Mark II pics at 1600 (no flash). I mean, the 5D had noise as well, but less, it would appear.
I checked the camera menus, and the Mark II had in camera NR turned off.
I'm not sure how to check to see if the 5D has NR in camera, or whether you can turn if off or not.
I'm going to read the manual and find out.

The Noise Reduction on Canon Cameras is just a dark frame subtraction, and applies only to exposures of 1 second or longer. Turning it on or off won't make any difference at all on shorter exposures.

Your results are expected. The 1d2N is top of the class for AF--if sports (or birds in flight) are what you're shooting, it's the camera you want. The 5D, on the other hand is a landscapes camera. It doesn't need that fast AF, but it is reputed to have the lowest noise available.

I should clarify..the noise on the Mark II..wasn't just horrid..it was there...but not super terrible. The 5d just had a slightly better noise perfomance.
I'm just wondering if the 1Ds has better noise performance since it has twice the Mega pixels & is FF.
I also know it costs twice as much at the IIn...shocked;

The original 1DS didn't have such great noise performance from what I recall reading. I believe the 1DSm2 is better but still the 5D is best of them all.

Maybe..but not dramatically so..and in real world applications, it might not matter. I saw some shots from the IIn posted in another forum, very little, visible noise..with no noise reduction, just converted straight to JEPG. This lady shot at 3200...wow!
So, I'll try it tonight (Football..see how it goes)
I've been relatively pleased with noise performance at 1600 & 3200 on the 30D. I would hope the IIn meets or exceeds that performance.

OTOH ...the AF accuracy is much better than the 5D, IMHO.
