Ah I see. Bare Bottom. How do you like bare bottom? I tried for awhile but went back to substrate. The tank I posted is bare bottom and doing very well. You are in Australia correct? I am curious what livestock retails there for? For example: A med yellow tang or a med copperband? How bout corals? 7 foot tank - so about 300 gallons?

Mark I had bare bottom for 9 years, then I went with 4 inch sand bed. After 3 years of that I nearly lost all my corals, don't know why. So cleaned the tank all out, that was a 9 hour job. Then left it bare bottom again. It now looks great again. I think it holds about 150 gallons. Fish have become to us very expensive. They go cheaper to other country's. Yellow tang even a small one cost $120 dollars. Copper bands are a lot cheaper around the $ 40 mark. Jonathan I use two 250 watt 14k metal highlights and a 40 watt marine glow fluorescent.

Ellen, I have had fish shipped to me. which worked out well. Doesen't seem feasible in your case however:( Time to start breeding them:D ;) I am surprised 14k gives of this color. Did you do any WB correction? I am surprised the flame angel hasen't caused more trouble...has it been there awhile? Nice light set-up! That toadstool is going to be huge soon;) :D I had a deepsand bed and refugium to maximize anarobic/aerobic bacterium...buts its been awhile:p ;)

I did have to do a bit of white balance pp, as it was a little to blue. The lights I have now are really very nice with a lovely blue spectrum, they are called Coralvue. I got them at my aquarium shop. The Flame angel is also 11 years old and has never been a problem. That toadstool is also nine years old, it was a tiny thing in a group of five. it is the one I kept as it was a gift from my Aunt from the Netherlands when she visited us. I cut the rock and sold the others. I did breed from a pair of Maroon clowns, but the babys only made it to 25 days. My set up was very primitive. I could have tried it again with the knowledge I obtained, but I could not stand to loose any of the baby's. I cried for each one. My breeding pair went to a man near by who made a business out clown breeding. They did very well for him.bravo;

I use CoralVue also. Currently I am using CoralVue ReefLux 12K Bulbs. I also like the Reeflux 10K bulbs.

I didn't know you were a reefkeeper, Ellen! You've got a great tank. Before we moved, I had a 75g tank. Overall I did pretty well with it but did lose quite a bit. It was my first experience with diy plumbing as I plumbed the entire thing out of pvc pipe. I used a 20g for a refugium which drained by gravity to the sump. I had almost as much fun with the refugium as I did with the tank. I was trying to grow the pods so I could get a Mandarin. Finally did but after a couple of months he disappeared. Found him on the floor a few weeks later. Made me sad.

I did ok with polyps but not so well with mushrooms or the little nubbly things (can't believe i've forgotten all the terms already). My pulsing Xenia did well but the mushrooms kept dislodging and the ricordia (aha!) ripped apart. My flow might have been too strong.

One day I'd like to have another setup. But in the meantime I'll keep enjoying yours and Mark's tanks. :)

Well at least you had a refugium!! nicely researched:) Mandarins are a hard go without an established tank;) Those xenia are always out of control!!
