I tried out the MKIIn tonight, with mixed feelings. Sure the AF was fast, more accurate..the 8.5 fps was really great. But I'm not sure the noise is that much better than the 30D. I dunno.
All shot with a 200 f/2.8, wide open, 1/400 to 1/500 at ISO 3200.

Jeff, as usual, great action shots. In most of the pics, I don't find the noise that obvious. To my eye, it becomes a lot more noticeable in the last two shots in the out of focus background. However, at ISO3200, you're pushing it to the limit, particularly in any areas that are underexposed a bit. My guess is that it's something you just have to live with or try some noise reduction software.

Are you shooting RAW and editing with ACR first? If so there is an option to reduce color noise. Use this and it desaturates the color noise, it will become less obvious and look more like grain. I have never heard the 1DmrkiiN had less noise than the 30D, I think you may be expecting too much from your equipment. And like Harv said, for ISO 3200 these look pretty good.

On another Canon forum, I was informed that the 30D has some kind of filtering system on the sensor.. I forget what it's called. The MKIIN doesn't have that, because according to the poster, Canon assumes the user wants to take more control..and fix noise in PP.
The implication is that we'd probably be shooting in RAW.
Makes sense to me.

Added another pic, to make up for that missing image file, icon. Sorry about that.

If this 3200 then I would be quite happy with the results. I don't know of any other system than can outdo this. Great action shots, looks like #57 is going to make a Ground sandwich out of #11.

Harvey,
Thanks for the kind words. Nothing scientific, but in my tests I believe the 30D shows slightly less noise at 3200, the the MKIIn. I asked around about this, and was told..it was due to the anti-aliasing filter in the 30D (and 5D).
In camera NR.
Of course, if I move to RAW...the advantage of the 30D (and 5D) becomes smaller.
Of course, part of the solution is to learn this particular camera body.:)

The team in white uniforms were seriously outmatched this year. Last year, our team was outmatched. We only won one game last year. This year, situation is reversed. The other team played hard...really hard, just not enough depth.
As to noise at 3200. It's sort of amusing if you think about it. Back in film days, I didn't hear very many photographers complaining because they had grain in some of their 3200 shots. Because...very few even shot 3200. I don't think I ever shot anything over 400 ISO in film...ever.
For portraits I was using that Kodak film (can't recall name)..but it was 160 ISO, and forumlated for portraiture. Slide film..I used...Velvia...50 ISO.
Now I'm concerned about 3200 ISO. :violin:
