Im writing to ask if any of you work in RAW, I use RAW all the time and was so pleased to get the new 40D, but dumbfounded when I cant view them in CS or CS3, I was advised to convert the images to tiffs or DNG files.

I do not want to compress every file I have to dng or tiff, I have thousands of images on my system.http://www.pixel-shooter.com/forum/images/smilies/Wacky%20Emoticons/wacko.gif

It would also take up double space as I would have to keep the original RAW file too, I use photo agencies and they do not accept DNG or TIFFs but want the originall RAW file; with basic adjustments eg, levels, curves or clone spots etc. which now I cannot do as I cannot save back to RAW once converted.

I love the new canon's software, the canon pro/ zoom browser, so I view all my files on here, but should I wish to use CS to do basic image adjustments I have to convert every image to DNG or tiff, jpg.

I have trawled the internet for updates and found many dng software but no RAW viewing.

Come on Adobe what are you doing and Canon, if either company could do a firmware update it would be great.

Or am I missing something really basic here, has anyone any ideas!

If you have cs3 you can open all your raw images in bridge. You can view and delete whatever you choose. I assume you have cs3 based on your post.

My guess is your using an outdated version of acr, like 4.0. If you havent done so already download the latest (4.3.1). When the 40D first became available Adobe updated acr to accomodate it.

I can see my 40D raws just fine in bridge/acr but I was using 4.2 and then 4.31

Thanks for that, i dont actually have CS3 yet only CS!

Can I still open the images in CS3 and resave them as a RAW file or do you have to convert them to DNG or TIFF/JPG first?

Thanks

cazi .... you can't resave your RAW CR2 files in PhotoShop. When you try and save a RAW file in Photoshop you are not resaving your CR2 but are saving as a new PSD file. You have to convert if you want to save changes. Once you have put your RAW file through the RAW converter and select Done you just save those adjustments to a separate file called a XMP sidecar file. If you choose Save Image in the converter, the save as dialogue will come up and ask you what format to save as.

So in other words if you send the RAW (CR2 ) files to a photo agency they will see no changes, unless you also send them the XMP file and even then it will only be changes you made in the RAW converter that, BTW, can be undone. Changes like cloning will not be saved in the XMP file. Most likely the reason the Photo Agency wants RAW is because the original RAW file is basically tamper proof.

However, with DNG or TIFF files once you make adjustments those adjustments can be saved within.

EDIT: Just checked my version on Canon DPP and even that converts the RAW to a different format when you try to save, although like PS you can save the recipe (XMP sidecar file).

DNG is a RAW format - i.e. it saves the raw, unedited data coming out of the camera. It also saves any changes made to the file within the file, not in an external file.

So, if you do save your files as DNG, you will not have to save the original RAWs as well (I don't). As far as stock agencies - I have no idea what they're doing, but if they're rejecting DNG files, they're still living in the past (most of these guys are still old film guys, they have no idea about digital).

You can open 40D RAW files in PSCS3 and view them Bridge CS3 providing you have the latest ACR update v4.3. For PSCS you can use the Adobe DNG converter to convert them to DNG RAW.
