This is the best I could do for noise reduction. I tried NX, Bibble Pro (noise Ninja), PhotoShop and ACR.
% crops are identical...
Both with a 70-200 VR (or IS) at 1600 ISO, 1/160 & f 2.8 in some bad lighting and equally adjusted for White Balance.
Comments?

Was any exposure adjustment made in either of these? As is I'd say the Canon is definitely better. The D200 looks mottled. The Canon shot also looks much brighter, were these really taken at the same shutter speeds?

Same exposures and adjusted to the best of my feeble abilities in Bibble pro. EXIF data should be on both shots.

Cant help you with the body dilema your dealing with, although even to my eye the Canon looks cleaner. I do know how hard it is to shoot gymnastics though. The gyms my daughter is often in, I could only get 1/100th at iso 1600 :(
Picked up the 85mm 1.8, largely to try and combat that. Theres a Provincial event this weekend. If that doesnt work I dont know what Im going to do other than try renting a 70-200 2.8 and living with the noise.

COOL! PLEASE tell me how that lens works for you. It is on my short list. the 85 1.2 is too much money and too shallow DOF...the 1.8 seems a perfect lens for this stuff.
My stuff is 1/125 & f2.8 so I feel your pain.
Please let me know how it works!

Any chance you can get a hold of a 135/f2 L? It'll give you one more stop advantage.

To my eyes, the Canon is clearly better. :)

Yes. I think the Canon has it too.

Will do. I gave it alot of thought prior to commiting. At 85mm it should give me enough reach for the further events and for the closer events it might be about perfect. Only problem there is the DoF at 1.8 when they are close. My daughters club only allows cameras during competitions, and not practise so I havent been able to test SSs but from testing in similiar lit rooms Im estimating I might get 1/200th at 1600, and if its bright day with natural light getting in I might then be able to ISO 800 or 1000 and maintain 1/200th.

I looked hard at that lens to Kevin. With the 30D Id be closer 200mm and while that would work for whichever events were on the far side of the gymasium, it would be too much for the close events. It might work on a FF though.
Hence Im "all in" :biglaugh: on the 85mm 1.8. Its hopefuly the perfect blend of focal range and apperature. Failing that then I think its either a 70-200 2.8 or even the 50mm 1.4, but I know the 50 will be too short for far events.

Look at the vaulting horse in both pictures. The Canon's is clearer and more precise.
