I ran across this effect and thought it would look good on some of the bird shots. It's called the Orton effect here's the link:

For me the jury is still out. Not sure how I feel about this treatment. I remember a long while back that Kevin played around with this treatment on a 'boat in the water' shot.

The Orton effect is a unique one. It's good that you're trying it on "alternative" shots. You never know when you'll find a winner. I had one shot of some sand dollars on a picnic table at the beach that took to the Orton Technique very well. So you just never know.
