Does anyone use it? It seems to me that it emphasizes noise more than USM. I've read about it but I think I may be missing something.

I never use it... Custom tailored USM will always work better IMHO..

USM for me, and I can change the settings from image to image. Never use anything else. :)

Nope, I'm a died in the wool proponent of the sharpening action posted by Jeff and tweaked by Harv.

I use it on rare occasion in images with extreme contrast. It's slow, and not as intuitive as USM, but it does a decent job of giving you more control over limiting sharpening in the shadows and highlights.

I'm not sure this really happens but when I've used it, the image in the preview appears differently than the actual image once you've closed the dialog box. It seems almost as if the sharpening that you dialed in then gets reduced (in opacity or amount or something). I know Flew over at NC uses it and uses the advanced features. I tried it but I flip flop between Jeff's custom sharpening and Phillip's High Pass sharpening. Depends on the image. That said, I rarely sharpen the entire image, unless it's a landscape shot.

Thanks everyone. I thought it was me, especially since it was "Smart" sharpen.
I don't think I use it too much either.

Always interested in a new method of sharpening, I came into this thread a bit late, but where can I find the action that Jeff and or Phillip have made?

Found it.

Thanks
Louie

Louie, Phillip's High Pass sharpening method is a sticky at the top of this forum. I had to search for Jeff's but found the thread and made it a sticky as well. Jeff's method is actually a thread started by Harv.

Neither are actions but at least with Jeff's the steps are straight forward enough to make into an action.

I routinely use both, alternating between the two depending on the shot.

Thanks Kevin, I found it. Even though I use a customized version of what Frank uses, I'm always looking for a better way of doing something.
