I know what you mean John. I wasn't even trying to shoot a Harrier until she stole what I was trying to shoot. They are frustrating. I never have that problem with Chickadees.

lol yeah :)
This isnt the first time Ive gotten close to Harriers and clipped some wings. Hhowever Ive trashed sooooo many shots from this weekend :( including 5 from the last sequence
400 f5.6 at 21 feet MFD
N. Harrier flying by at 10 to 15 feet
= cursing a blue streak

John, I can just feel your frustration! I did this with eagle shots this past summer and it was the first time I had ever seen an eagle and had a camera with me. I almost made a doorstop out of the camera :)
For the first shot, you could kind of place the bird in a BG of trees and maybe get away with something like that or make him floating in the clouds...sort of like a fantasy photo. It's so sharp, I'm sure you could find something to do with it.eye;

hey I do that everytime out :D That first one could easily be a portrait :0 Half cup full, its when your lens doesnt focus because they are too close, now that is frustrating!!!!!!!!

Thats an idea Keith. It may be sharp enough that I could heavily crop it and make something of a portrait out of it :) or as Lisa suggested a composite of some form.Thanks hadnt thought of dealing with it that way, .

John, I would rather deal with this than see nothing at all. Now if we were to get a 100-400L this problem wouldn't present itself. LOL.

This is a common problem while shooting motorsports as well, hence the reason I use said 100-400L. I love the flexibility of a good zoom. Bottom line for me is getting the whole image.
