Well, the few times of the year that it happens, we actually had a cold front that brought in some waves here in south Florida. So, since I have a few surfer friends, I thought I'd go out and get some pictures of them (and the other people out there too..). I've never shot this sort of thing before, so C&C would be great. These are all from sunday, and I have much more to go through. Enjoy!

All shot with 1D and 400 f/5.6 handheld (don't have a tripod or monopod yet..)

Shutter speeds around 1600-2500, apeture at f/9 and ISO at 400.

And, this was shot at the end of the day as we were heading in.

Some awsome shots Adrian. I photographed some surfers at Marblehead MASS last fall but it was a dull day and the surf wasn't as high.

These are great Adrian! Good on you for trying something different.

One thing I might suggest is to try it again but this time open up your lens more. Not that f9 is bad but it would be interesting to see by comparison how much of a difference shooting at f5.6 would have and how much more it would isolate the subject. Maybe too much but I'd be tempted to give it a whirl.

Thanks Jeff! I'm glad you liked them. I've got many more to come, so check back often! :wideeyed: :)

Thanks Ron! I was actually quite suprised how big the surf was. Once or twice a year, we'll get waves head high, but this was pretty decent. It ranged from waist to chest high and they were pretty clean rides too. I love shooting surfing. Lots of fun!

Thanks Kevin! I was really happy with the results. A couple friends of mine are going to Nicaragua this summer and want me to come to photograph them, so, I think I may have a vacation coming up soon!!! :) :) :) :) :)

But you don't think that the f/5.6 would be to shallow of a DOF?

Thanks again everyone..

Cheers,
Adrian

Possibly. But that's why I said if you can go out and shoot it again and try it to see what the difference would be. Just as an experiment.

I've seen some other surf shots and the best ones that I've seen are shot shallow so the surfer is all in focus but is so isolated from the balance of the scene that it just pops!

Terrific set. Looks like you had as much fun taking pictures as they did surfing. Well done. :cheer: :cheer:

Great surf action series Adrian! Looks like you had the focus down pat!

My favourites are actually the last two, the kicking of the sand and the angle of the beach and out-of-focus surf, the composition of the B&W conversion and the grain. Very nice capture of the surfers and atmosphere!
