tough question without knowing more? I have shot both systems, moved to Canon back in August strictly to find a shooting system that supports my shooting style. Neither is better than the other except for specific use, for myself I wanted better AF for action shots, better ISO performance, longer lenses with VR or IS. Lots of great things with Nikon but it was Canon at this point that complimented my shooting style. Dont have experience with a 30d, d200 is a great amateur level camera with lots of features, Im sure the same can be said for the Canon, but what do you want it to do?

Please help with an advice! Nikon D200 or Canon 30D?

I have both. Both are good cameras. I like th 30D for low light and astro photograpy. I only have the 17-40 for the 30D. I use th D200 for everything else because that's where my main glass is. I don't believe you could go wrong with either one. If you like low light non flash photography then you should go with the 30D. IF you will be doing majority with flash then I would go with the nikon D200. Scenics either should do. Action I would give the nod to the nikon unless you are planning on growing with the system then I would go canon. If you just want a camera to take pictures of family and family events then toss a coin and you will win either way.:)

I had a D200 for a year....Nikon for 25 years.

If you need high ISO Performance, get a 30D or a D50.

The D200 is spectacular with an SB-800 flash....and really good when the lighting is controllable.

I sold all my Nikon Stuff and bought a 1DMKIIN and some lenses....but I shoot available light al ot and have kid in Gymnastics were flash photography is not allowed.

YMMV

I haven't shot Nikon but I do own a 30D & a 5D and used to own a MKIIN. I have to say that of those three the 30D shoots the worst at highest ISO's. I never (should say RARELY) take it above 800 (and when I take it to 800, exposure has to be spot on PERFECT or there's visible noise). The other two I have/had no probs taking to 3200.

This is not to say that I don't have use for the 30D (I'd sold my previous one and missed it so got another). But when I must use high ISO, I use my 5D instead.

edit: As for the general info about the 30D...I really do love it. It's faster than the 5D (fps, which is the main reason I replaced it). Honestly, I think it's a great all around camera and would recommend it highly. Except for weather proofing, it's really loaded. My son just researched out the two (Nikon D200 and the 30D and chose the 30D barely, because of the average cost of the higher end lenses being a bit lower...he was just entering in to the dslr field and had no investments to consider).

Alex,

I've seen your work, and that is why I say this: Do not disregard the 5D! For the stuff that I have seen you post here, the 5D would run rings around anything else, with the possible exception of the 1DsII.

Yes I know it's pricier than the 30D, but you get so much more "magic" with the 5D... :)

Thanks Rudi! I think it is possible that 5D will be my next camera, but for now
I have to buy some lenses and the body(I don't have any Canon stuff:) ), and with 5D it will be too hard for my budget
