Lol, Mr Glenn. Just for your information;), Jonathan is a Canon shooter and we've got a couple of Aussie friends who shoot Canon and there's even a Minolta shooter in our midst, though he doesn't post too often. So, there's a good mix currently. :)

It's all in the name :)
Course, if "sony" doesn't come up with a replacement for the KM 7D, then my name may change to "Pentax_Pete"....LOL

Nikon body with Fuji guts for more dynamic range and no blown highlights, all Nikon lenses so I guess that qualifies me as a Nikon Girl??? *LOL*

One of the best portrait lenses out there, no doubt. I dabbled with the idea but ended up with the 105 VR which does double duty for macro and head & shoulder portrait type shots.

Suitably qualified! The new Fuji S5 in your midst??? Looks like it could be a great camera for that Nikon glass.

First of all Jonathan, ummmm, nice avatar! (I think) ;)
I had the 85/1.4 and it was a real gem of a lens. I got mine used for a great price and actually sold it for more than I paid for it. Of course it helped that I bought it from a friend/coworker. It really is a fantastic portrait lens.
There is, however, one that I liked even better. It was the 105/f2.5 AIS lens. That lens was sharp! If I ever really was trying to capture a special portrait, that's the lens I used. And I only paid $145 for it on eBay. I recently sold it and actually have regrets. I should've kept it and just bought an adapter. :o

Really?? I have used the 85 1.4 and thought is was FANTASTIC. I have also heard great things about the 105 but better than the 85 huh? Wow, I might have to pass this on too those I know on the dark side:)

I have only heard good things about the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4. I don't have a Nikon body, so I guess I will never know, but I did use an 85mm f/1.8 in Canon flavour, and that was a nice lens. Not so long ago I bought the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L Mark II, and that is WAY better! :D
I don't think there is a bad 85mm prime among any of them... :)

I prefer Nikonian to Nikonite. Rolls off the tongue better. Started with Minolta in the 70's then went to a Nikon F2A. I used Canon and Nikon in the 90's but couldn't support two families. :)

While the Bokeh isn't perfectly as smooth, there is simply something about the image this lens creates.
I don't know if it's the coatings, the nonocrystals or what...but it is one sweet piece of glass, and actually surpases my old 105 2.5 AIS...which I dearly loved.

Now, now, this is a non denominational site where ones equipment is supposed to be a closely guarded secret. Actually I am from the "White side" as are quite a few of the most recent joiners.

Simon, I have to investigate it thoroughly.... doesn't sound good enough improvements for me to jump up just yet, same resolution, little faster which I don't really need.... Probably going to be over $3K Cdn so I'd rather throw that at a lens! ;)

Add me to the Nikon camp. I do wish that they would come out with VR/IS in their longer lenses though!
Waiting for Nikon to announce the 400-600 AFS-VR f4 zoom.....;)

I am also waiting for the 500m f/4 VR lens. Or that 400-600mm f/4 VR zoom.
Until then, I will keep my money and Nikon will have to keep their lens.

Well I am a lot whacko but I own Nikon bodies, D2X and D100 but I own Canon stock. The stock has done pretty well which lets me buy more black glass. :) :) Maybe it is because I am ambidextrous.
Oh yeah, I just purchased my first canon camera. I think it is called power shot A710 IS. It is really for my wife.

As I am concerned with the environment and Global Warming I shoot Nikon, of course. As I have learned this past year, those White Lenses reflect a lot of sunshine and heat back into the atmosphere, contributing as much to Global Warming during daytime football games, American/European/Australian, as all of the cars coming to and leaving the games. This has been documented by noticing how prominent the temperature shift is along the sidelines of an NFL game. This is also documented in Al Gore's movie about Global Warming. It is also theorized that those White Lenses outgas a variant of methane, contributing to a breakdown in the Ozone Layer as well, but this has not yet been fully proven. One other theory, which is being currently studied by several major universities, is that the outgassing also comes from Canon Photographers, as well as their equipment, and that along with the methane variant there is a great outpouring of Hot Air.
Honest, I'm not making this up, you can look up the studies yourself.
So we, the Nikon Shooters, are the true conservationists of the photographic community. Doesn't that make us all feel better now?
