Hello.
Currently i'm a canon user.
I'm thinking of selling all my canon gear and hopping on to the nikon wagon.
I took a look at many cameras, however as I'm still a student
My budget is very tight.
From selling all my canon gear. I can make about $1000, plus 500 or so cash I alerady have in hand.
I am not much of a new-tech person. So I'm considering to buy the D1x.
What do you guys think?
I currently own canon 350D and Nikon F100 as my film camera.
your help is greatly appreciated!

The reason you have to ask yourself is WHY. Why are you considering switching to Nikon? What will Nikon give you that you do not get with Canon? After seeing some of your work, and the fact that you do quite a bit of it in low light, Canon would make the better choice, IMO. So... you have to ask yourself: "What can Nikon offer me (over what I am already getting from my current equipment) than will make it worthwhile to switch?
So, tell us - WHY are you considering this? Then we can hopefully discuss it and help you better. :)

Now, ain't THIS a kick in the head, I totally agree with Rudi on this one, he certainly has the initial set of questions down correctly, that is for sure.
Given that you have the F100 now, you would be able to share lenses between the two, and there would be some familiarity, but since you are already Canon Aware I don't think this is as important as it would be for someone with an F100 who was looking for their first DSLR.
But I would really question why the D1X? All of the "newer technology", including the lowly old D2H, is quite a bit ahead of the D1X in features, without blowing your budget.
But again, Rudi asks the most pertinent question, why even contemplate the switch? What do you expect to gain that you do not already have?

Just for the record, I would be giving the same advice if the OP wanted to switch from Nikon to Canon. It is the same question that I would ask myself, before even considering a switch to another brand. As much as I'd like to own all the cameras that are out there, I don't have the cash, so sticking with the system that works for me turns out to be the cheapest, and quite an effective, solution! :D

thanks all for your guy's attention.
the main reason for me considering switching is becuase mostly of how the cameras are made.
after holding d70s, d80 d200.
Nikon camera body feels more sturdy and well built.
it seems as though it was put together better.
also nikon's compatability with old cheap MF lenses..
I've been considering switching to Nikon for awhile...
pff... with all the questions all of you guys asked me to consider..
it's beginning to feel like a bad idea to switch..

Don't think of it as being a bad decision. I think Rudi's follow up statement is a good one. Knowing both Rudi and Bill for awhile, I believe they want to help and are simply asking probing questions to better provide information.
I shot Nikon previously and switched to Canon a year ago. One of the biggest draws for me with Nikon was the functionality of the old MF glass. I owned a few and the ones I had put the newer AF lens to shame. Incredible optics. One of the reasons I bought Nikon initially over Canon was how the camera (D2X) felt in the hand.
I'm not extremely familiar with the D1X but as I recall, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, the biggest complaint was battery life. If you have Canon glass, have you considered looking at the older pro body 1D? I know SharonP on this forum has used that body and only in the last couple of weeks upgraded to a 1Dm2. She may even be willing to sell her 1D (based on some comments posted on this forum).
Please don't feel anyone here is going to try to talk you into or out of a decision. But we may ask probing questions causing you to think about WHY you want to do something. Once you determine that, you can make a better decision and one you'll be happy with. :)
