Tried another short light setup today, my best half kindly agreed to pose :)
Then a lot of PP, came out with this... what'd you say?

I think you did a great job Igor. It's like it's split-lit. I also like the Sepia conversion. Very nice!!
I might be curious to try something with it. Not because I think it needs improvement but just out of curiousity. I wonder if you were to do a curves adjustment and darken up the shadows a bit more. Not so much that you couldn't see the camera left eye but just to darken the shadows. I think it might add a level of contrast and mystery to it.

The portrait is fantastic Igor but you don't deserve her.

Igor educate the ignorant please. What do you mean by 'short light?'

Igor, great shot. Now a little advice, even though you didn't ask for it.
NEVER SAY OR PRINT ANYTHING THAT YOUR WIFE WILL SEE OR HEAR ABOUT HER PHOTO NEEDING A LOT OF POST PROCESSING.
The result can be severe pain or instant death. At the very least, a night spent sleeping in the guest room.

Your wife is a beautiful woman, Igor..I like the subtle lighting in this and I also like the overall softness that is portrayed both by the lighting and the PPing. I do like your choice of using sepia for this as well. :cheer: :cheer:

Guest room! He'll count himself lucky if he doesn't spend a year in a cold cell in a Jesuit silent retreat house eating one cold meal a day and hoeing in the garden when he isn't enjoying the allotted four hours of sleep.
Igor lives dangerously. But, he does make beautiful photographs, PP or no.

Thanks Kevin, actually I went thru' lots of versions using different contrast, fill light, crops, etc. Somehow this milder version appealed most to me :)
Thanks for suggestion anyway.

What do you mean by 'short light?'
Thanks Joe, "short light" is a term used in portraiture meaning the DARK side of the face is closer to the camera than the LIT side. Usually complements with a back hairlight on the other side to separate the subject from the background.

Thanks much Lisa! Sepia was one of three final options in PPing, first wanted to use more unorthodox bluish tone, but then gave up and went on with sepia :)

Very good photo, Igor! I like this type of light.(Was it three sources of light?)
I think this is one of your best portraits!

Thanks Alex.
Two sources: a strobe with softbox to the right and SB800 with reflector behind left.

And what did you used to make flash fire?
Igor

I put it in MC4 mode, so it was triggered (remotely) by strobe flash.

Severe pain, yes. Instant death, no! A woman would never deprive you of the torture of growing old, being reminded of THAT day for the rest of your natural life... :D
Nice portrait, BTW! :)

Nice portait work and post production on this image. The only thing I would like to see is a bit of catchlight in the eyes. I wish I could get my wife or daughter to sit for me, so that I could work on portrait shooting.

Thanks Stewart, I tried adding the c/lights in PS, but they look too artificial...

I think the subject turned out very well, the only thing I would do would be to even out the background lightness so the right side doesn't catch the eye as much.
