These little ones (mixed boys and girls) were a blast to shoot. All shot at ISO1600 1DmkII w/100-400L.. Two arenas with tough lighting. In one arena I had to shoot through the glass.....

Hey, great shots. You'll have to make some prints for the players. These are pictures they'll value for their whole life. I've tried to do this and have some idea just how tough it is to stop the action, get the white balance right, and the colors so spot on.

Thanks Sheldon... Yes, it was a challenge, but it was a lot of fun...

Nice shots. Its tough shooting at some of these arenas, especially when the lights have unmatched colour temps.

These are great Jeff, wonderful to see youngsters like this on the ice. You have nailed the exposure, sharpness and WB. Mao is going out tonight to do a similar shoot for a mens league.

I was going to ask where you had been but now I know. At the arena. Sheldon is right about the white balance. That would be a little tricky but you pulled it off. Love the goalie shot.

Aint that the truth. The one arena also had shadow areas which really threw me a screwball. Semi bright on oone end dark on the other.. Thanks Stewart..

Thanks Bobby.. They are no bad considering the conditions, but I was shooting for better.. The look on the kids faces when they saw their pictures was priceless. Have fun Mao!

Thanks Joe. Yes, at the arenas, 200 miles from home, 14 teams, for 3 days. When I got home I had to process the images to get them up on my website and then prepare to teach a PhotoShop course for Wed. Has been a busy week. The WB was a nightmare it changed no less then three times from one end of the arenas to the other, so I had to shoot in Auto WB and cleaned up the mess later. The goalie shot is one of my favorite. I was surprised how well it turned out considering it was shot through the tinted glass.

Awesome, as usual, Jeff. Love the goalie shot too. As for the lighting, It can't get much more ugly :arghh: than arenas and gyms, and gyms I know well. You did a great job.
Again, thanks for Wednesday evening... thank you;
Cheers,
Tom

Thanks Tom ... As ugly as the lighting was it was still fun. The parents were very happy with the images as well because they could get nothing good at all with their P&S...
Glad you enjoyed Wed night.... Thanks for attending..
PS How was ice fishing on Thursday?

Nice work! Hockey is such a pain to shoot, but you controlled the crazy lighting very well.

Not too bad, got 3 between us. They weren't as voracious as in previous years. Ice about 40" thick.
Trail in was a handful even for a snowmobile... some clown in a six wheel ATV tore it up a day or so previous to us. :disgust:
And then like a dummy I left the point & shoot in my truck at my buddies place. :arghh:
Had the batteries in my pocket though... rolleyes;
All in all, still fun.
Cheers,
Tom

Just before I went to do the shinny game I noticed this post and thoughts of disaster went through my mind.
Like you, I had to bump the ISO to 1600 and wide open at F2.8. I think I did ok.
Aren't those tinted glass fun? AF in these arena lights was fun, wasn't it?
I'll post one from the shinny game later.
You did good Jeff - considering everything.

Thanks Ron. I like that goalie shot as well. In this age group shots like that are few and far between.

Thanks Mao ... Yes it was a challenge and the tinted glass certainly made it interesting, glass seemed to be a different color from pane to pane as well.
Excellent job, Jeff. You deserve a lot of credit for a job so well done when you consider the conditions.
Thanks Harv ... persistence, patience and a little trial and error here. Oh the beauty of digital when it comes to stuff like this..
