Are there any reviews out? Has anyone here used one? It's been out awhile now.

There's been quite a bit of talk about it on the Lighting Forum at dpr. I don't know of any reviews though.

Have you checked the web site recently? They have already announced a new more powerful version, the Zeus! That's a lot of money to get that cool catch light :biglaugh: .

I've not checked the website....just saw the ad in Shutterbug, and few mentions here and there on the 'net.
It sounds interesting to me. My first love in photography was/is portraiture, but lately I've taken a mistress...called sports photography. We are just starting out, so I still may return to my first love now and then..for a quickie.
I just don't like setting up multiple lights. If I had room, I'd leave them set up, and adjust them as needed. I also don't like the same old "look" in every shot.
I'd like something portable, and still capable of delivering professional results.
The ABR800 ringflash interests me very much for that reason.

There was a thread the other day in the Lighting Forum at dpreview. The guy posted some portraits he had taken using the ringflash. Imo, they looked kind of freaky, the catchlights, that is. It shouldn't be too hard to find the thread.

I found the catch light a matter of taste for sure hehe.
If one was to diffuse it that may be the answer, they have a sock that covers the ring effect.(diffuser) I believe the regular ring flash that they plug into the wall was the equiv of 320 watt. Some would say weight is an issue but you see the big boys shooting with medium format and ring flash (no cord)
So it has its application for sure.

Looks interesting. It is rated at 320 w/s. Looks like it is more interesting when you add the moon unit. I have photogenic pack and 3 heads and 1 monolight. I have thought about the B400's for the lighting for hummingbirds. The 1/6400s could come in handy when using with my SB800.
