The manufacturer of Eclipse fluid has changed their product due to the old faithful Eclipse Fluid causing damage to camera sensors in some of the newer cameras. The camera manufacturers have made changes to the sensors in some of the newer cameras, by removing the glass layer from the sensor. Not all cameras are affected, but the newer E2 fluid is recommended for these changed cameras.
Read the list attached on this site, carefully! Your camera may be listed as requiring the new E2 fluid, and damage has been noted if you continue to use the old Eclipse fluid to clean your sensor on the models which have an E2 beside their name in the list.

I am not sure if E2 is available yet, but this new product should be in stores shortly.

From what I have read, continued use will cause the sensor film layer to change colour to a pinkish colour, and the sensor will need replacement. Of course this is caused by repeated use and attempting to remove some spots that are abrasive.

Yes, it's true. That's what it looks like on f45, slightly pinkish on that one side. I have since purchased the arctic butterfly and use it instead. While I notice no degradation in photo quality, I'm sure I will eventually have to have the sensor replaced because of the fluid. Which does upset me a great deal...

Lisa, you may want to check with the manufacturer of Eclipse, since I hear that they are backed up by a warranty on their product, and users have had repairs done to their camera, at the manufacturers expense. They don't want to lose their market, and so far have been very accommodating to users who have experienced damage.

Yeah I've never trusted that stuff, you just never know. May that's too bad about your lens.

What's in Eclipse??? Isn't it pretty much just pure alcohol??? Does anyone know?
Reason I ask, I use pure ethanol to clean my sensor and lenses (not that I clean either all that often :D). Got some from a chemist friend of mine, and AFAIK, pure alcohol was always safe to use on just about anything. If the manufacturers are using sensor materials that discolour easily, that is not a good sign...

This only started showing up the last time we cleaned the 5D...and it happens very quickly.
Lisa, how often do you clean your sensor? How many times would you say you have cleaned it before you found out about this???

Thanks for the heads up, guess I'll have to toss my almost full bottle of Eclipse, at 57 I thought I had a lifetime's supply :).

Ron,
I'll take it. Mine almost all evaporated. :arghh: It still works well for lens glass.
The Eclipse people make a version that is supposedly sensor safe for the 5D & MK III.
Now you'll have a reason to get the Artic Butterfly.
Cheers,
Tom

Arctic Butterfly, I was just trying to remember that name in another thread :). Yeah I saw the Eclipse II fluid on the Eclipse website, will likely get me some and like you say I can use the old stuff on my lenses and glasses :).
Evaporated? You need to screw the cap on tighter :).

<www.visbledust.com (http://www.visbledust.com)> for the Butterfly.
I have the SL700 and bought some brush wash tablets too. Not cheap at $64.02US, but it works. Jeff tried mine and seemed happy. I think it is ideal for the everyday routine sensor snot cleaning, leaving the Copperhill kit for those infrequent stubborn dust specks.
As for the evaporation... Maybe my wife is taking a nip or two behind my back. ;) ;) Kidding aside, apparently it is a common occurrence. I read several posts about the same thing. Not thinking anything of it until I went to use mine the other day and found the bottle to be almost empty.
Dropped in on Gregg the other day and commented about trying to get both types of Eclipse and Pec Pads, hoping he might bring some in for stock, but he didn't seem particularly interested.
Relegated to ordering online, but that can be troublesome as more and more suppliers will not ship the product, as I presume it falls within hazardous material guidelines. I believe Vistek can supply.
Cheers,
Tom

I had some of the new E2 type shipped up from the States recently for my 5D. I had purchased one of those all inclusive type cleaning kits specific for the 5D last Oct/Nov. and it came with the original type Eclipse fluid, but I've not had a reason to use it to date. I was a bit ticked when I found out about the new E2 type, as I feel these companies that manufacture the cleaning products are lagging behind the newer technology being put into todays equipment, and we the end user are the guinea pigs. It's sad that some people have damaged or ruined their sensors with the wrong stuff;(
