Hi friends,
Perhaps you can help me with this problem. I have a Canon I-9900 printer, which prints like a dream most of the time but something strange is happening.
I noticed with each print, there is a set of dotted lines which go the length of the print which I susupect a being put there by the roller-brush assembly touching against it as it passes through the the printer. The lines are exactly one inch apart across the paper-about 5 or 6 per sheet. Other than that the print is fine and ink distribution and colour is fine, but it is extremely disctracting.
This is ruining the prints. With ink and paper costing so much, it is a real problem. Has anyone run into this problem? any suggestions or fixes?
Thanks
Ashley

Ashley, I have the same printer and have never experienced this problem. I suggest you contact Canon thru their 800 number which can be found on their website. I have found the techs at Canon Canada to be very helpful in the past.

It may be the beginning of a clogging print head... Have you run it through the cleaning cycle Ashley?
If this does not work I suggest you follow Harv's suggestion and call the 1-800 number...

If the Canon is anything like the Epsons I've owned it may require several cleaning cycles. Also, again on Epsons, there is a test utility for checking if the heads are clogged. However it sounds to me like the ink isn't drying fast enough which can be the result of using the wrong paper for the printer setting, especially if the printer uses pigment inks.

Send Keith a PM. I believe he had this printer and may be familiar with what you're describing. He was away for the weekend and sending a PM may result in a quicker response.

Thanks guys...I really appreciate your responsiveness and willingness to help. I dug deep into this issue on the Internet and in the troubleshooting section of the manual and I believe the paper is actually being scratched.
In order to alleviate this, I will use exactly what Canon recommends, which is 105GSM, 28lb paper and see if this rectifies it. I have been using a bit larger. Also, there is a function you can choose on the Maintenance Section "Prevent Paper Abrasion"
Oh well, I'll keep you posted on this one. All I can say is that the clearance between Print head and paper must be very small.
Cheers

Thanks, Ashley. I'd be interested in your findings. When I bought my printer, I placed a large order directly with Canon for a variety of paper as well as a full ink cartridge change. Everyone I have ever talked to in the business has stressed using the printer manufacturer's paper for best results. The only time I moved away from Canon paper is to some Ilford Classic Pearl which is a great paper but takes much longer to dry than the Canon.

Thanks guys...I had a long talk with Canon and determined the following:
1- If you get any banding or scratching, you need to use the "Prevent Abrasion" selection setting
2- Best option is to use Canon Pro Paper
3- Any paper that is the least bit curled due to humidity will create problems feeding through.
4- The 105gsm, 28 lb rule applies to standard paper and not photo paper
Thanks for you response on this one...
