After seeing how fluid both Mao's and Paul's Wimberley Head II gimbal mounts were, I ordered one. This is going to leave an $820 (Cdn. with tax) dent in my pocket. Ouch! And I thought my Arca-Swiss ballhead was expensive.

There might be a Wimberley Sidekick for sale soon. rolleyes;

You two guys are the most capable I know when it comes to spending 'MY' money. Wait... I have to include Kevin in that lot.

Okay, buddy. You are at the top of the list. Wait..... you're the only one on the list. When I get the new unit and make sure all is okay with it, I'll drop you a note and let you know what I'm doing.

I find the Jobu Designs (http://www.jobu-design.com/index.html) products to be equally as good as the Wimberly, with the added benefit that if you need to pack "lighter" you can remove the Horizontal arm and have a heavy-duty sidemount, a "super-Sidekick" sort of. And for you folks North of the Border, heh, right in your neck of the woods :biglaugh:

I have zero affiliation with these guys, other than as a very happy customer for the past several years. The full Heavyweight sits on my Gitzo 1325, the Jobu Jr. on the 1228. I have used the Jr. on the 1228 with my D200 and 400mm f2.8 with zero problems, even though that weight is pushing it.

Ian is a great guy, he deserves the business. If nothing else, they are certainly worth a look.

I don't know about swinging as well as the best, but certainly with the best.

Bill, I looked very closely at the Jobu. What swung me to the Wimberley was 2 things.... I had a chance to try one and loved how it felt and the Wimberley layout for the controls was what I preferred. The original Wimberley layout had the controls in the same place as the Jobu but the Version II has them in a better location.

Yeh! Now you know I feel! :wideeyed:

Uh huh, Rudi..... I empathize with you.

Congrats hope you enjoy. You should have shot my 600mm for a while, then you would think you didnt need a tripod for shooting the 300mm, great work out. Feels light as a feather now when I shoot the 300mm :p

Hey, if I can handhold Keith's 600mm in the back seat of his truck while he's bouncing me around those back-woods Alberta country roads, you can handhold the 300

I was very impressed with the ones that Mao and Paul have so I'm sure you're right, Perry. High quality pics? Hmmmmmm..... that might require someone with talent the lens.

I know you're righjt about that. Once the Visa bill clears my desk, I will soon forget the cost. Right? Tell me I'm right.

Harvey you'll forget all about the cost when you start swinging the lens around on it. Well worth the cost. Congratulations Harv.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED. Yep, my Wimberley arrived today. I have not had an opportunity to try it out in the wilds, but did take time to set it up today with my 300 2.8 etc. etc. etc..... Beautifully built and seems to work as slick as cat poop on linoleum. I think I am going to love this.

My Arca-Swiss now resides on my Benbo tripod which I have had since the dawn of time and never used.

Never heard of Benbo. Benro, yes. Was that a typo or is there yet another tripod I must research. I desperately need to get a new one and right now the Feisol is the front-runner.

Nope, not a typo. It's a British made tripod that is build like a tank. Waterproof. Very veratile. Very heavy.

P.S. I've been thinking about a Feisol as well. Been looking at the CT-3371.

Benbo were the bees knees some years ago (and still are for those who need absolute control over their tripod legs). There are still things that a Benbo tripod will do that others won't mainly because the legs are infinitely adjustable, not a case where they have three or four positions each. Not many people need that sort of control over their tripod, but some do (interior car product shots are often done remotely, using a Benbo tripod, or at least they used to be).

I used to lust after Benbo tripod years ago... until I picked one up! They are heavy!!! :)

Yep, it's heavy, but I can't bring myself to give it up. It has my Arca-Swiss on it now and will be used for landscapes. Built like a tank.
