Good morning everyone!
After seeing many threads, great discussions, and civil discourse the past couple of weeks, we felt the need to communicate how we wish to move forward with Pixel-Shooter. Your discussions the past few weeks have demonstrated to us that we are on the right path. It has also made us realize that we have succeeded in reaching one of the goals established at Pixel Shooter's inception: Create an environment where those who truly love photography can gather and share. We have been blessed with an awesome group of individuals who seem to share this philosophy and also share in the same passion of photography to varying degrees. Because of the feedback received, we felt it necessary to relay our intentions.
First off, the attitude of "If it ain't broke don’t fix it" seems to be the general consensus. With regard to increasing membership, we have no desire to mass market, but rather, will allow the forum to continue at its current pace. Considering how far we have come in a short time, it has already exceeded our expectations, and very simply that is because of you. The majority of our membership has grown through word of mouth as you seem to feel Pixel Shooter is a great place to be and have shared the forum with other enthusiasts, friends and family. All we can ask is that you continue that theme if and when given the opportunity.
With regard to posting sizes and number of pictures and trying to be cognizant of those who are on dial up, we ask that you limit your postings to a maximum of 5 pictures with file sizes not to exceed 300kb, lower is better ;). This will not be strictly enforced, but we may send you a friendly reminder if your post is excessive. Please try to keep your images a maximum of 800 pixels on the longest side. For those posting panoramas, please keep the width under 900 pixels. Feel free to include a link to a larger original, if desired.
Because of the size of our forum, and the consistent feedback of beliefs as to why this is a great place to be, we would like to ask you to consider changing your user ID to your actual name. This is not mandatory and is only a request if you feel comfortable enough to do so. If you are having problems changing your profile, please send a PM to Kevin, Rudi, Harvey or myself and we will get it done for you. If you feel strongly against that, we ask that you take the time to create a signature line in your profile with your first name. We are a small enough forum that we know most by first name, but would like to solidify and personalize, through this action, the type of forum we wish to continue to have. It also makes it easier to reply back to a responder of your thread.
We have had some great discussions and differing opinions concerning the commenting on picture threads. We currently have a couple of mechanisms in place to accommodate everyone so nothing will change in this regard. That being said, we would like to reiterate our position. We understand that not everyone is at the same level with their photographic skills. Some are on a path interested in improving and growing with their skills while others are most interested at this time to simply share something they’ve captured. Absolutely nothing wrong with either position and we can certainly create an environment for both.
We feel it is important to continue to foster an atmosphere of safety and comfort concerning the posting of images. Therefore, we ask that critiquing not be offered on general posts but be reserved for those situations when the original poster has requested critiques. These critique posts can be made by using the Critique Icon, posting in the Help Forum or by the original poster specifically requesting critiques or comments. Otherwise, we encourage the “WTG” kind of comments.
This is a really informal forum where many of us just wish to show what we have been up to or share in our trials and tribulations in photography. In contrast, we can also be a more formal forum when we have individuals who want or seek constructive feedback to improve. We are fortunate to have many skilled and seasoned photographers who are more than willing to help. Providing shooting details or EXIF data is encouraged but again will not be mandated. It can be helpful to include for those seeking critiques. Also worth mentioning, no one person’s opinion is more important than the next. Everyone should feel qualified to comment.
We can appreciate other forums having stricter rules and guidelines, but we are not like other forums, and quite simply we’re proud of that fact!
We hope that you feel that your feedback has been received and taken to heart, and in fact, we have listened. We strongly encourage each of you to continue to talk out loud so we can make changes as needed to make this a better place as time goes on.
We have lots to be proud of here, and many thanks go out to all that have helped us grow and make this a fun place to be. We very much look forward to the months ahead to see what the future has in store.
Thank you for making this a great place and we’ll see you on the boards!
