I don't think there's anything harder than choosing a p&s! Too many options.
I can't speak to the model you mentioned but can say i used and loved my Canon G1 a lot! Hopefully others more well versed will chime in to help you. I'd recommend taking a peak at dpr for some reviews there.

I too started to go through the motions, there are times and places a guy just doesnt want to drag around all his crap. go light I say. LOL!!!
Looking at the Canon or Sony personally, must be CF capatable and built in IS body with descent optical zoom. Still yet to make a final decision

When choosing a P&S earlier this year, I, too, was hung up on the idea of it being CF compatible, and preferably a Canon. Then I decided that the IMAGE was what counted (especially since digital storage media is so cheap these days), and I bought the Fuji Finepix F30.
Excellent high-ISO images (comparable to the EOS 10D!), small, portable, no shutter lag, a great P&S. Now I have no excuse not to have a camera with me at all times.
I am glad I thought outside of the square. As much as I like the Canon P&S line-up, there was nothing to compare to the F30 at the time of my purchase (and I think the F30 is STILL the P&S high-ISO king :)).
Just my $0.02! :D

Hi Mike:
P&S is evolving so quickly that by the time you make a decision something newer hits the market. I still have my Canon G-2 and keep iy with me with a small tripod all the time. It is now several generations old but continues to make great images. I guess all I am saying is your decision to get a P&S is very sound and you are never without your camera. The finepix looks like a good choice.

Well, I bought a Canon SD300 a few years ago, and have been totally happy with it. It also shoots 60 FPS video!!! Here is one of my favourite shots from this little beastie, and I also bought the underwater housing for it.

This is a tough decision. When I was looking a few months ago, the S3 had just been released along with the SD700. The Canon reps were all at the local camera store and I was pretty well set on the SD700 but could talk to them and try each of the cameras. I got the S3. After I saw the zoom range and the swivel LCD, I went for it. It is not a pocket camera like the 700 and is easier to use and hold. The downside (and it is a pretty big one) is the viewfinder. It is a low-res LCD and is not the greatest. The picture quality is really good and works when I don't need the big stuff.
Now the SD800 is out with the wider zoom, going down to 28, and it has IS as well. It is tempting to add this to the arsenal.
I think everyone who is using a DSLR has to be ready to accept that the workings of the camera and the quality of the photos is not like its bigger brothers. Yet, that is what I do when I go camera shopping. The reviews on these P&S's have been very positivie.

Did you decide on one yet? So many to choose from. F30 can be had for around 220 after rebate now. SD800 I think looks promising as well. By the time I actually buy one though I am sure a whole new crop of cameras will be out.

I was just at Best Buy and took a look at the SD800. I've been hearing some really good things about it. I had forgotten about the Fuji F30 so I didn't check it out but recall a while back that was highly regarded as well. There's a thread at NC with some sample shots from the SD800 started by LittleWingsomething (Chris). He bought a lens from me.

Mike, it really is decisions, decisions, decisions! I love my G2 and had hoped the G7 would be its replacement. :disgust: :arghh: So, I ended up with the SD800IS and actually it's not bad for a P&S. It's with me at all times, and so far, no complaints. The wider angle is a nice feature but the telephoto is less so you have to figure out what you would use it for the most. If I'm going to do some "serious" shooting, then the DSLR is still my choice but it'll be perfect when kayaking or somewhere you don't want to be hauling heavy stuff. Good luck on your choice and let us know what you end up with.

I am very happy with my Fuji F30! Like Diane, anytime I want to shoot seriously, I reach for my 5D (duh! :)), but the F30 is an amazing little piece of gear!
It is the only P&S that I know about that goes up to ISO 3200 (and actually has a very useful ISO 1600!). It is the high-ISO king of P&S. The one other thing that is frankly amazing is the battery life! I have only recharged the battery once so far! I charged it when new, then recharged it once, and that it! I've had the F30 for a few months now, and don't use it all that often, but the battery was only emptied once in all that time, and is still showing full after its recharge!
I was going to buy a spare battery when buying the F30, but people talked me out of it. I'm glad I let them! :) For me, this makes the F30 the perfect P&S for me - it's not a camera that I will use all that often, but I know that I will not run out of battery, ever (it gives plenty of warning when it starts going flat, unlike some other P&S cameras). If I ever have a really important day, I guess I will just charge it up beforehand, then I know it's good for at least 500 shots on that day - not bad for a camera with no optical viewfinder and a 2.5" LCD on the back! :D
P.S. I just reviewed the 47 photos that are on the card inside the camera, and as I did so, the battery indicator dipped down one third (to only two-thirds full), so the battery is slowly being used. The battery indicator is fine and working! I just thought that I would point that out. :)
Some shots from my F30. These were taken shortly after I got the camera, so the ISO performance is about as bad as this camera can do (not that I've learned any new tricks with the camera since then :D).

I loved my Canon G5 and I still have it. It takes fantastic pictures, so I would recommend the replacement of it.
It was alittle larger than some, but it introduced me to so many settings that I never know existed, and when it was time for my next camera, it allowed me to move to a SLR with some understanding of what did what.
I hope that helps.

Haven't really had a good workout with it in all types of settings yet.....
the build quality is great !! the auto WB seems really good too. it is fast to start up. battery life is good. haven't figured out how to trick it into using only fast shutter speeds yet..............on my old CP could set it on the sports setting and turn off the flash - got some reasonably good concert pics that way....
So far I'd say its pretty good but not GREAT....would love more manual settings.....I'll try to work on it some more this weekend :)
