If you've never visited Point Lobos State Reserve (just south of Carmel, California), it's a real treat. It's a great day trip from the SF Bay area, about 130 miles south of San Francisco on the Monterey Peninsula . There are lots of different environments: meadows, forests, rocky cliffs and beaches, which are just enough off the beaten path to provide both serenity and adventure. Sea lions bark and bask offshore, ground squirrels romp about on the rock at Whaler's Cove (an underwater reserve), birds and bunnies hop here and there. Don't forget to take a picnic lunch with you. Once you get there you'll want to spend a whole day.
I went there last Friday to celebrate my Birthday and had a wonderful time. I took lots of pictures and met John Palmer, a photographer with the California Department of Parks and Recreation. He was on photo assignment shooting rip tides.
Here are a couple of panos from Whaler's Cove:
This one show the view to the north towards Carmel from the buff overlooking Whaler's Cove.

The calm waters and kelp beds of Whaler's cove underwater reserve.

Foggy view over the coastal chaparral south towards Big Sur.

The rest of my gallery can be seen here, but please be patient while the images load. Once they do you can mouse over the thumbnails and see a larger pic.
