well i finally asked Dad if we could go together, so he said sure, it was a really quiet day but surprisingly this one hawk gave me an opportunity, not for long though.

Excellent Delaney!

The bird people will be able to tell you for sure, but I think the dark patches under the wings, at the front where the wing bends, suggests this is a rough legged hawk. It would be what they call a light morph. If I'm right, it is likely a juvenile as the older ones would have passed through several weeks, if not a month, ago, leaving last year's kids to bring up the rear in warmer weather. Also, if it's a rough legged it is on it's way up to the Arctic to nest. A Northern Harrier doesn't have the white on the tail or the leg feathers. The rough legged hawk, the ferruginius hawk and the golden eagle, are the only hawks we see (eagles are just big hawks) with leg feathers that cover the whole leg --- much like the snowy owls you were shooting earlier.

Great picture, Delaney. Get dad back out there, and show us some more!

What a beautiful shot as a first BIF of the hawk Delaney. I can remember my first hawk shot wasn't this good.

Excellent job and yes, keep bugging your Dad to take you so he doesn't hog all the beautiful pictures.
