I just recently upgraded my iBook G4 to an intel based MacBook. One of the nice options of OSX is to transfer all of the files and applications that were on the old computer to the new computer. Photoshop seemed to transfer fine. However, I have found that no matter what the image, I cannot choose "Save for Web" from the file menu. It is grayed out and not available. I've looked at preferences, looked through the Adobe forums and checked the help files and do not see an answer. I am hoping someone here might have an idea what is causing this.
Thank you.

I don't know of any instance where you can't use save for web (bearing in mind I'm a PC user) but it could be something got corrupted in the file transfer. You might try installing PS on the new computer from the CDs. In Windows Save for Web is an export plugin called "Save for Web.8be" located in the Plugins directory, not sure how that translates to Macs but you could see if that plugin is installed.

I would suspect that you haven't got the right file type selected - my instinct leads me to believe that you're trying to save a 16-bit file (which will not "Save For Web"), or a file other than JPEG ( some won't "Save For Web"). Double-check your settings.
I can Save For Web on my Intel Macbook, so I know it's possible. :) Photoshop works the same on these machines as on any other, so a setting is out of whack somewhere...
The other possibility is the App transfer went wrong, as Ron suggested. Migration Assistant, when used to transfer settings from an old PPC model to a new Intel model, has been reported to cause problems (the apps may be installed differently in some instances). You might have to reinstall Photoshop the old-fashioned way.

Save for web will automatically reduce a 16bit image to 8bit rather than be greyed out or unuseable, it's only in "Save As" that the 8bit formats are unavailable, at least on a PC.

Thank you for the replies.
I ended up calling Adobe. The support person mentioned that there are a few issues with CS2 running on an Intel Mac, but Save for Web is not one of them. Versioning is. Support said the cause was probably the migration tool when I moved things from my old Mac. I needed to uninstall CS2 and re-install from the CD's. I did that and all works fine now. I did not want to go this route as I would have to download and install all the updates and I would lose all of my settings. Oh well, they are back.
What happened is the migration tool did not move the plugins. Going to Photoshop and then About Plugins shows a long list and Save for Web is there. Before the re-installation, I had 4 plugins shown. Now they are all there.

I suspect you're right, Ron, since I usually "Save As", and was just going through a mental checklist of what the issue could possibly be.
Good to hear you've sorted it out, Rick! With an Intel Mac, you will want to upgrade to CS3, since that will run natively on the Intel chip, rather than under emulation (Rosetta) like CS2 does.

Rudi,
Thanks. I plan to upgrade to CS3 but have this thing where I usually wait about six weeks after a product is released and see what the issues or problems are. I do notice that PS runs pretty slow on my Macbook.

Six weeks of waiting should not be that hard. :) CS3 runs very nicely, BTW. :D

I agree with Rudi, I've been using the CS3 Beta for several months and it's very stable, speed wise it runs about the same as CS2 on my systems.
