I bought an Epson flatbed scanner with a film adapter - just for simple scans - although I am surprised at the quality. Mine's the Epson Perfection 3490 Photo (since superseded). I am very happy with the results. Recommended one to your sister, and she seems very happy with it, too! :)

I bought a 48-bit one a few years back and scanned quite a bit. I was at Best Buy not long ago and saw both an Epson and I believe a Canon that looked nice. They had film and slide adapters. Both were under $200USD. Check their website and you can probably find them pretty easily.
I've got a ton of slides I'd like to digitize from when I traveled to Europe, retracing my steps in hopes of creating a calendar one day. Never did but would like to have those images in my gallery. One of these days....

My Nikon Coolscan IV ED with digital ICE is an excellent slide and negative scanner. Likely out of production now but I'm sure it's successors are as good :).

Well, I have the Coolscan LS-40 with digital ICE as well.. scans at 2900DPI... They have a newer version of the Nikon LS-50 or LS-5000 with the stack loader where you can scan 50 slides unattended...

Most of the flatbeds that they sell do an admirable job but if you want to achieve professional results we use a Hell Drum Scanner at work that will mount up to 20 x 26 on the drum. Now thats scanning.
