The Canon rebate in Canada went into effect today. I phoned my dealer and told him to ship my 30D out to me. It has now been shipped and should be in my hands the first of the week. :D

I've been using my 20D all year (and will be keeping it as a second body) and suspect the 30D won't be a lot different. I know about the picture styles (which DPP 2.2 will apply to 20D RAW images) but that applies to jpegs. I always shoot RAW. I also know about the spot metering and larger buffer etc..

Is anyone aware of any 'personality' differences between the 20D and 30D that might give me a jump start with the new body?

Thanks for looking.:)

Off the top of my head, spot metering and 1/3 stop adjustments were added. Might want to check out dpr review section and see what else there is.

Thanks, Kevin. Been there, done that. They do show the enhancements from the 20 to the 30. I was just wondering if anyone had moved from the 20 to the 30 and seen any behavioural differences.

Can't help you, Harv! I know there are major differences in auto-focus AND the way a camera exposes the image between the 20D and the 5D, but I'm not sure if there is such a large difference between the 20D and 30D, or if they just added a few new features (useful features, no doubt).

I know that if I was buying a 1.6x crop camera body today, the 30D would be what I would go for, despite being able to buy the 20D (possibly even new) at very substantial discounts. The auto-focus alone would be worth it (I know love the AF on my 5D - MUCH better!). The larger LCD and spot-metering are also something I would not want to live without any more. :)

I guess you're gonna have to buy one and tell us, not the other way around...

Thanks, Rudi. I shall report.

By the way, I almost went for a new 5D because of the full frame and larger sensor. Also all the other nice things it has. However, the 20D / 30D is better suited to what I shoot. I love my 20D and am looking forward to the enhancements built into the 30D.

I have a depossit down on that one, Bob. :D

Hmmmmmmm..... ya think? It won't be coming from Canada. ;)

I think if it were a 5D or 1D I would be excited, Jonathan, but I am looking forward to it arriving. I wanted it for the larger LCD (old eyes here), spot metering and larger buffer. I often fill the buffer on my 20D and have to wait for it to empty. Guess I'll need 8GB cards now.

Thanks, Jonathan. I don't expect results to be much different than from my 20D. I wanted a 2nd body so the 30D was logical choice. Very similar camera with the same sensor etc.. It will become my day to day workhorse camera and the 20D will be my grab and go light rig as well as my backup body.

Well, I'm not to the 30D yet, I hope the new lens works OK on the 300D, at least until I hit the lottery and get the 40D:):)

That lens will work just fine in your hands on any camera. Congrats.
