I cant believe these havent been touched yet  , I mean none of like to buy glass or bodies or accessories :D Well unfortunately I do, LOL, like to try new things and make my own opinions of such.
If you could only have one lens, what would it be? for myself I guess it would be my 600mm only because of what I enjoy to shoot, extremely sharp, got my distance, works great with TC's and lastly got to luv that IS. And it be handheld, my arms are getting a good workout!

For me, probably the 300/f2.8 IS L. It's touted as being one of Canon's best. The focal length is practical for where I shoot. It's handholdable. I can easily add a 1.4 for 420/f4 or a 2.0 for 600/f5.6 without much loss of quality.

I couldn't keep just one lens. I just couldn't! :)
My 24-70mm f/2.8 L would probably be the last lens that I would ever let go. It's an amazingly 'boring" lens, I never get too excited about it, but the thing just keeps bringing home the bacon! It's a workhorse! It is an amazing zoom, most probably the best that I have ever used, and if I was thinking rationally, this would be the last lens to go.
But...
In reality, I might hang on to my 85mm f/1.2 L II ! This thing is amazing! I would just find ways of using it for most situations, and be done with it! :) (I might have to hide the 100-400L for the wildlife and whale shooting, though :D).
See? I couldn't possibly keep it down to just one!

Although I like to think of myself as a landscape photographer, I think my 70-200 f2.8 gets more use than any of my other lenses.

Picking one lens is like asking a Mom to pick her favorite child. They all have their good points and bad points.
I love the Leica 50 f/1.4 summilux for the color that it renders.
I love the 85 f/1.2L for its buttery bokeh.
I love the TSE-90 for its versatility.
I love the 135 f/2L because it makes the subject pop.
I love the 200 f/2.8L because it is sharp and quick.
I love the 300 f/2.8L for its sharpness and reach.

Since I'm not fortunate to own the 600mm yet, I'd have to say it's a toss up between the 70-200 2.8 IS and the 85 1.2. They're both amazing.

Thats a tuff one Keith as I like many lenses....most any f/2.8 lenses make me smile.
Im sure Id fall madly in love with 600mm as soon as I shot thru it.
I think if I only had to have one and taking everything into consideration(price too) it would be the 50mm 1.8. I wouldn't be shooting many tweety birds with it though.

Let's see...
I have all Canon glass:
100 2.8 macro
17-40 4L
24-105 4L IS
70-200 4L
70-200 2.8L IS
300 4L IS
400 5.6L
I couldn't possibly get by without all of them. And.. life would be so much better if you would send me that 600 4L IS.
Right now I use a 20D which is a 1.6 crop camera. I think if I had to pick just one, it would have to be the 24-105 4L IS. It's a very versatile and sharp lens.
However, I have pretty much now decided to add a 5D which is a full frame camera. This would change things. Then I think it would have to be the 70-200 2.8L IS. With my style of shooting and the fact that I have a 1.4TC it would give me a bit more versatility.
NO!!! I'm keeping them all. :p

This is an easy call for me. My 300 f2.8 vr is attached to my face. Pristine images, crisp, fast focus, handles teleconvertors without a blink, and I can hike with it!

Well, I could get by with my 100-400L. I already use it 90+ % of the time anyway.

I absolutely LOVE the 300 4L IS. It's a tossup as to which is my sharpest lens... my 300 or my 100 macro. The IS is wonderful and the IQ is outstanding. I think my 300 + 1.4TC is as sharp (or even a tad sharper) than my 400 5.6L. It was one of my better decisions.
If you like, I can post some sample images from it in the next day or two. Let me know.

You consider the 300 f/2.8 handholdable?
Remind me never to insult you, at least if I am in striking distance! Whew! :D
