Hi everyone,

While this is not strictly a photo accessory, we all need to charge AA and AAA batteries these days, and I have only ever once had a charger that I was completely happy with. Up until I bought this latest unit, I had three chargers, two quick chargers and one slow, small, travel charger. My favourite of these was a fast charger, but lately I started suspecting that the charger was not working properly - it would indicate "charged" really quickly, and batteries were going flat really soon after first using them, stuff like that. Not to mention that it tended to cook AAA batteries (overcharging them :( ). For all I know, it was probably still under warranty, but frankly, I was starting to get sick of it. :)

So, I was in the market for a smart charger, one that would let me know the status of each battery as it was being charged, and preferably one that would enable me to refresh the batteries once in a while. If it ended up being a large unit, I was willing to live with that, since I already had the travel charger.

Well, I found one that is both small and lets me do all the things that I require! I am very impressed with this unit, and thought I would share my experiences here. The charger is made by SONY, and the model number is BCG-34HRMF4. It has an LCD screen that shows you the status of each battery individually, and of course, whether you are currently charging or refreshing the batteries. You can override the settings at any time to start charging or refreshing whenever you like. :) I haven't taken any photos of it, but the Amazon page has some photos that will give you an idea of how small and handy this charger really is. Best of all - it doesn't come with a power brick (it's all internal, even though the charger itself is tiny!). Only used it on one set of batteries, but after one refresh cycle they are holding up just like a new set (my old charger was obviously faulty!).

Check it out here: SONY Australia (http://www.sony.com.au/catalog/product.jsp?id=BCG34HRMF4) and Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BCG-34HRMF4-Charger-Indicator-Batteries/dp/B0002IOIMQ)

Hi Rudi, Where did you buy it from? Have been looking for a good charger. Know what you are saying about not getting a full charge. Frustrating

Not sure if they ship to OZ, but you should try the ones from www.ripvan100.com
The sanyos rock!! I get around 250-350 blasts from the 580EX with them, the charger is pretty good, it lets you monitor pairs of batteries, not individuals and it charges slowly (which is always best for batteries) anyways, check them out..

Rob, I got it from Domayne. They had it listed at $89.95, at which point I asked them whether they were on drugs. He replied that he did not believe so, and after a pregnant pause offered it to me for $60. :)

Charles, despite the title of this charger, it actually is not a quick charger. It charges the batteries in a nice, leisurely manner - although not a true trickle charger (which would take over 12 hours), this thing charges a set of four AA's (2600mAh) in about 3, maybe 4 hours. It monitors the batteries individually, and when they're full, it stops (it doesn't keep trickle-charging, it STOPS charging!). No need to remember to take them out of the charger - you can leave them in there indefinitely!

Hey rudi did you check the charger battery rating? some of these guys only do a max of 2400mAh when the battery may be 2700mAh. Also does the charger have a slow charge option? I spent a lot of time looking around and researching finding those two things to be two of the biggest issues in durability and getting the most of your batteries

James,

The charger comes with a set of 2700mAh Sony batteries, and is in fact rated for batteries up to 2700mAh. There is no slow charge option that I know of, although as I mentioned previously, the charger is NOT a fast charger! It also has the "refresh" function, where it will completely discharge your batteries before charging them again, thereby conditioning them.

Congratulations, Rob! $59.95??? ;) :biglaugh: I'm sure they're cheaper online, and if I knew what I was looking for to start with, I might have gone that route. Let me know what you think of it when you get it. :)

I am getting great results from it! How do I know? My Bluetooth keyboard and mouse last forever now (looks like several weeks' worth of juice in them), whereas they didn't last more than two weeks at most before. Good in a way, since that is why I started suspecting my charger. :)
