Keith, I started out with Photoshop Elements and moved up to Photoshop only when my interests moved on to more complicated tasks that are more easily done in Photoshop CS, i.e., artsy effects, actions etc. Good luck - you're starting out on a fun adventure!

I also started (and still use) Photoshop Elements and highly recommend it. If you are looking more along the line of free - then I have heard good things about a program called GIMP and there is also Google's Picasa softare.

Sounds like you have some good advice, if and when your serious to upgrade, download adobe CS2 , free thirty day trial. Better yet ;) Im sure someone has CS or version 7 which will do the majority of all your photoshoping dirt cheap, lots better than Elements

I still use Elements! There's a couple of things I miss not having CS, but I find it works pretty darn well.

One point of advice for a PS newbie: Learn about layers! There's a small learning curve to get over, but it's well worth it. (Valid for PSE or CS, or any other software that allows for layers. If it doesn't allow for layers, it's not worth using.)
