Is anyone here using an EF 300 f/2.8L IS ???
If so, do you have any images you can post taken with this lens? Also, any comments on it's performance with the 2x Canon TC?
Thanks for looking.

Hey Harv,
No, I haven't shot with it. I did get to use the Nikon 300/f2.8. I'm anxious to see some images from members here. I've searched pbase and I know there are some who shoot this combo at Naturescapes.
From what i've seen and what I've read, the 300 handles the tcs very well. Some claim the 300/f2.8 is the finest lens Canon makes. I'm covering my 400's ears but I'll have this lens one of these days and plan to use it with both the 1.4 and 2.0 tcs.

Thanks, Kevin. I think I've probably heard some of the same things you have from some of the reviews. I was hoping someone might actually post something from actual experience with the combo.
I don't mind taking my chances on a lesser expensive lens, but this one costs HUGE.

Harv, the photos taken with this lens are legendary, some have said they take themselves and post process as well. I can't imagine anyone being without one. They also make espresso.

Espresso? Well, that makes it worth the cost.

My understanding is it is the canon lens to have. must be as I RARELY ever see on for sale on FM, I know, been watching  Actually Im amazed as a whole how well the C handles the 2x, not so with N . Have to say I miss the crop factor on the N for sure.........was seriously considering moving from my 600mm down to a 500mm just from a weight perspective, but Im thinking I may miss my reach. Believe it or not, considerable distance, if my cam was a 1.5 crop factor, I wouldnt worry as much..........
So back to your delema, order it, and thank your wife after words :D :D

Harvey,
This is the lens that I will eventually get for low light tele work and for use with Extenders (especially the 2x).
Here are a couple of grab shots with Perry's 300mm f/2.8 L IS from my trip to South Australia to see the Southern Right Whales. As you can see, both of these (well, at least one of them), were shot "from the hip", in a hurry (the bird was onshore, the whales were in the other direction, so I just turned around and snapped it, the other photo, well, the less you know, the better! :D).
Here is the bird photo (no sharpening at all):

Here is a crop (no sharpening at all):

Here is the "other" photo (no sharpening at all):

Sorry if I cropped the wrong section. :)
All images completely untouched, just converted from RAW. 5D, 300mm f/2.8 L IS and 2x Extender II (effective focal length 600mm). You be the judge... I might have missed focus with the bird slightly, he was moving and was gone in seconds. I nailed the focus in the "other" photo, even though that was was definitely not one where long lens technique was used. :D

Rudi, thanks so much for posting these. That 100%, non-PP crop @ 600mm is pretty impressive. There is nothing like seeing first hand evidence. Appreciated. Now, where did my wife hide her credit card?

Put it this way, Harv - if I had the funds to put toward a tele lens right now, the 300/2.8 L IS would be my choice!

I don't know. This is beginning to look more like an erotic dream than a reality. Best price I can come up with in Canada is $4,950... add sales tax and shipping and it's close to $5,700. slam;

Send me your cc info Harv. I'll be happy to stand in your stead, order the lens, receive the shipment, put it through its paces and verify it'll meet your high standards. It may take a while though so I wouldn't expect to receive it until like next June or so. My email address is in my profile. I'll be waiting for your info. I can run out at lunch time. :) Oh, no need to thank me, I'd do it for anybody.

Ah, Kevin... it's times like this that show what a truly great friend you are.
A friend is someone who will help you.
A 'good' friend is someone who will help you move.
A 'great' friend is someone who will...buy you a 300-2.8
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
