XP Pro/Vista 64 bit and Nikon Capture/NX

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have completed a configuration for a new PC (Xeon) and the OS that I believe will serve me best at this time is XP64. Some of the software programs I use benefit considerably from 64 bit. There are driver issues with Vista 64 that concern memory so for now, I'll run XP.
I've read some discussion about a possible work-around using NCapture on a 64 bit system, with DEP Data Execution Prevention and I'm wondering if that is a viable route to try. My understanding is that Nikon Capture and NX won't load into a 64 bit system. However, it seems there is a way to utilize Nikon software on a 64 bit OS. I presume that PS CS3 and 64 bit work well together.

(online discussion)
"Unfortunately, it is impossible to switch off DEP in Windows XP 64-bit edition, so I had to switch off it separtely for any Nikon's exe file (Nikon Capture and /Common files/Nikon folders) Additionally it is necessary to check box "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP" in the file properties window (for ALL Nikon exe files again). Now Nikon Capture and Nikon View work!"
There is an article "Trouble Shooting Nikon Capture Problems" on the Earthbound Light website that also refers to DEP. http://www.earthboundlight.com/photo...-problems.html
The other option I'm considering is to run a dual-boot system, but I've just started to look into that and so I'm unsure of what is involved.

There is also the Microsoft WOW64 option. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896456

There is also "Compatability Mode" which I need to find out about.
If there are other consideration/options I would appreciate your input/thoughts/experiences.

Well, I for one am running 64bit Vista Premium on a new Quadcore system and I found all the drivers I needed to use except for the Nikon Scanner, but that is not a big deal.. I have not scanned images in about 2 years now so i can wait for a update to Nikon Scan.

Other than that I have gotten every software package I need in stalled and it runs fine. I even now have the Capture NX trial version installed and it works fine on a 64 bit OS... Did not have to disable anything just did a install and it works...

That's great news Eric. The only software I haven't checked for 64 bit compatability is Corel Painter X, but if memory serves, other Corel products get along well with 64 bit.
Thanks Eric...appreciated!!

Good that things are running well. You may want to stay away from NX 1.2 There are some issues with it. Freezing after using the cropping tool and a couple of others.

I take it you've had no crashes with Vista?

How's the temperature holding on your Quad Core?
