If you can make it right now, the larches are turning in Banff National Park. This was taken yesterday (Sunday, September 16th) near Bourgeau Lake.

Thanks Mike. The wind was howling so the larches aren't as crisp as I would like. With the possibility of snow in the forcast for Sept 18th night, there could be some awesome scenes this week!

Lovely shot Pam, can't say I am looking forward to snow as much as you are.

Well I now know what a larch is!
I like your photo as is. I find it a little busy with the background and the shadow. I find my own tastes moving towards more simplier compositions. Perhaps if the trees were more dominate?
No right or wrong just my opinion which probally would not be taken with too much weight.
Look forward to seeing more ... Tim in BC

I can hardly wait for some good snow flakes to fall, but I could do without the cold!

Thanks Tim! Yes, it's not a great composition. I find it really hard to hike with the family and take anything other than snap shots. The good thing is we made it to the top of Mt Bourgeau (9613 ft).

Gee don't say that, or I'll be back into full blown lens lust mode!! All the snowy owl pics from last winter were to die for.

Beautiful scenery Pam, love the wide open view and the hue of the distant mountain gorge, and great composition! Have heard a lot about Banff, maybe one day I might be able to get to your part of the world. Not too sure about the snow though...
You will have to excuse my ignorance here, how big are these larches? Difficult to get the sense of the scale here. I presume they are grown trees and not baby shoots?
Regards,
Jonathan

You will have to come out some time Jonathan! Even though the temperature is dipping to -4C at night and there is snow on the mountains, the air is crisp and clear. This particular larch (Larix lyallii) grows in the upper tree line and rarely gets over 10m. The tallest specimen in the image was just over 2m tall.
