Spectacular....but you knew I'd like them from the last time. Still have yet to see anyone do these as well as you. I like them both for different reasons but was rather intrigued by the shadow and how it plays an interesting role in the first one.

Alright Pam, I'd take my shirt off my back to be able to do this. Unfortunately I'd be bald as well as I rip my hair off in frustration.

Now, after you've finished chuckling, may I say seriously - that this is spectacular!

Wow!

Every time I do these I learn more. It is interesting to play with the properties of the liquids, and it is challenging from a photography perspective to manipulate the colors and lights to get effects like the shadow. And then there is the randomness of it all....like opening a present everytime you click the shutter.

Wow, you are so clever to get these. How is that done Pam?
I'm not the first to do these Ellen, but I hope to do them in my own sytle. See below for details on set-up.

:biglaugh: You'll be the one having the last laugh when I wear out my camera! Glad you liked them.

OK Rob! It's not that hard in theory....

The set-up is: Camera on tripod, prefocus on the spot where the drop will land, make the room dark, open shutter with remote, let the drop pass through a photogate trigger which triggers the flash, close shutter.

To control the flash, I use a photogate trigger built on this design (http://www.hiviz.com/tools/triggers/makeown.htm#pg). I'm lucky that my friend hooked this up to a laptop for me so I can vary the flash delay through a program. The drop comes from an eyedropper which is mounted on a stand. If you don't happen to have an electrical engineer handy, you can buy a prebuilt unit. You can also take a flash picture in a dark room without using a photogate. Just rely on your own timing.

If you vary the liquids you use (different densities/surface tensions), you will get different effects. You will take hundreds, perhaps thousands of pictures and this is hard on the camera and flash. Depending on the length of the lens you use, be prepared for the liquids to splash the front of the lens (and everything else that is near). I use an old 35-105 with macro capability and also my 70-200 with the 500D close-up lens. Last year I used my D70, but it has since died and now I am using my D200. It's TONS of fun! Go for it.
