Images can be found here (http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=26755). And full resolution here. (http://homepage.mac.com/deinsel/PhotoAlbum18.html)

Images are quite good and usable up to 3200, with very limited chroma noise and decent detail at that level. Looks to be a 1.5 to 2 stops better than the D200/D2x. Should be a great camera, once I learn how to shoot as good as Dave Einsel!!!!

I only had a quick glance but those certainly look much better than the kiosk sample I saw previously

At this stage it is difficult to compare between samples, as I believe some of the camera data can only be read by ViewNX, not Opanda. So we don't know how much in-camera noise reduction is always at use. I suspect the Kiosk samples had it cranked up, and resulted in loss of detail. Also those seemed to be taken during harsh outdoor sunlight. These new images are very good at iso 3200. It's nice to see some nighttime shots, too.

Still - the proof is in the pudding! Wish those darn cameras would get here.

I agree David. I had been looking at the D300 as a possible alternative for birding. As I view the high ISO images I've seen I try to pay attention to those that represent a similar lighting/subject situation that I would encounter while birding. As I look at them, I think about how a GBH would look in poor light.

Those kiosk samples were loosing detail at ISO800 and 400 wasn't even so great. I want to go back and look at these that you've linked but I don't recall seeing poorer light shots at first glance (but I'm probably wrong...busy day at work).

My only drawback in the consideration of the D300 was the Sony chip and fear of poor ISO performance. Guess we'll just keep checking for samples. :)

Hi you really need the not yet released capture NX 1.2.1 as it has unique coding to get the best results from the d300 and d3 which does improve the noise performance, at the last NPS event I attended both cameras apparently had the final firmware ready for general release.

Phillip.
