According to the guide, Confederate troops were heading for this ridge in order to move south and re-group. Unfortunately for them, the Union had several thousand troops coming up the other side. The rest is history. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House several days later. By the way, for those who are interested, neither Lee nor Grant set foot in the actual courthouse. The surrender was signed in the McLean house right next door. History lesson over.

What an absolutely gorgeous shot of Appomattox, EB. I've made the tour of Gettysburg and it's quite moving to experience that but I've never been to Appomattox.

Thanks all. It's beautiful country around there, as you can see, the leaves aren't cooperating very much.
