I still have barred owl photos to edit from a couple of weeks ago. Lucky me!
This one took some work. The left half of his face was shaded a bit and the right half had more sunlight on it. If I set the white balance for the sunny side, the left side turned blue. If I set the white balance for the shaded side, the right side turned yellow. I've just started to play with layers and masks in photoshop, so I made two tiffs - one with each white balance. Made the sunny image the main layer, then selectively painted through the parts of the colour corrected left side from the other layer. I think it came out pretty well. This was the original with the bluish shaded side: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jameslj...36769/sizes/o/ Of course I have no idea what any of this looks like on other monitors. Comments and criticisms welcome. Thanks for looking. ![]() |

Beautifully done James love it, any reason why you left the bottom part out?

Super job processing James...a big improvement over the original and better still, if you hadn't told us we wouldn't have known.

Good job, James. This looks great to me. Was this bird perched on your knee?

I checked this out on my desk top and lap top and the changes are so obvious on both James. I think Jim has a good point there. I was in the same position yesterday and took a few shots where I got the head only. I then backed up to get all of the bird plus a little of the perch and surroundings. For posting I've decided not to post the head shots. Please remember this is all subjective of course and you're going to put up what pleases you and not the other way around. I sure like what you did with the colour cast though. For detail alone, this image can't be beat. It's sensational.

Thank you for the comments everyone. I really appreciate them.
About showing the whole bird vs a head shot. Thank you for the feedback. It's really good to know what others' reactions are and in this case wanting to see more of the bird. I get caught up in tight cropping. I didn't forget to take wider views with this bird - but I have on other occasions. Really I'd love to show the entire bird to the same level of detail as this head shot and also show the surroundings. So I kinda want it both ways. It's a massive image to do so, though. Not that practical for displaying over the internet. ![]() |

I agree with Jim that the bird is too tight in the frame. I would look much better with room around the bird.
