Hello everyone,

I'm getting conflicting information on whether or not older SLR lenses will work/autofocus on my D90 body. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

I think Kevin is pretty knowledgeable about old Nikkor lenses and I suggest you drop him a PM, Josee.

I might be oversimplifying this a bit (I'm not a Nikon shooter), but AFAIK the D90 can only use the newer-type lenses with internal AF motors. So any of those will be OK, but older lenses with "screwdriver" type AF mechanism will not AF with your camera.

I prefer to be known as The Oracle. Everyone is allowed to get it wrong. Once. It's a free pass sorta thing.

Sorry to say Rudi is incorrect. Look on p229 of your camera manual The older screw drive AF and AF-D lenses will auto-focus on your D90

Default Professional Style [Nightshift]

I'm not familiar with the D90 so will bow to Larry. I will say however that physically the older lenses will fit on the newer Nikon bodies. Some won't meter the way you'd expect and if you go with AI/AIS lenses they won't autofocus (since they're manual focus). But, with that said, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to pick up a few older AIS lenses. (Some of) Their optics are incredible. I had a 105/2.5 AIS and a 28/3.5 AIS manual focus lenses and they were fantastic. I should manual so didn't need to rely on the camera's metering. There's more detail out there regarding metering (stop-down, etc) so you might want to google. Also check Bjorn Rorslett's website if you want great info about the performance of those older lenses on a variety of bodies.

I'm not familiar with the D90 either but all the Nikon user manuals are available on-line from Nikon so I looked it up. There are some real gems amongst the AI and AIS lenses. The micro lenses are great. The thing to watch for is pre-AI lenses (1976 and earlier) which will physically damage your DSLR camera if you try to mount them. If you are not sure about what lens you have you can check the serial number against the list here: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html to see what version you are looking at.

Aaaah. I wasn't sure if the D90 was one of those new cameras that couldn't use screwdriver lenses or not. I stand corrected. Since I shoot another brand, I'm not as current on Nikon gear as I am on Canon.

And that's ONE, Larry...

Hopefully you the rest of your life will be free of errors
The first time I picked up the brand you shoot, I couldn't even find the on/off switch.
I haven't touched one since

Cheers,

Larry
